MU 100 Choir - Elective
[1 Hour]
Performing choir is an opportunity for the individual to develop skills of articulation, breath and tone control, and to apply the elements of theory and harmony. There is a choir fee for music which is given to choir students at the end of each academic year. The College Choir performs for chapel services, the Christmas Concert, the Fellowship Meetings, the Spring Concert, and Graduation Fellowship. Open to non-music majors as elective.
 
MU 101 Fundamentals of Music (Non-Music Majors) - 1 Semester
[2 Hours]
This course is designed for Christian school teachers as a general introduction to the basics in music. The course includes instruction in music appreciation, music history, notation, instrumentation, and additional music training for non-music majors. Not required for Education majors with emphasis in music.
 
MU 110 Symphonic Band - Elective
[1 Hour]
This group is open to all students who have had previous experience on woodwind, brass, string, or percussion instruments. Performances include chapel services, the Christmas Concert, Fellowship Meetings, the Spring Concert, and Graduation Fellowship.
 
MU 111 Music Theory/Elementary Harmony 1
[3 Hours]
This basic course in rudiments will include a study of notes, the staff, measures, tonal properties, and major and minor keys. The second semester will include advanced training plus a practical use of the information taught.
 
MU 112 Music Theory/Elementary Harmony 2
[3 Hours]
This basic course in rudiments will include a study of notes, the staff, measures, tonal properties, and major and minor keys. The second semester will include advanced training plus a practical use of the information taught.
MU 111 must be passed before taking MU 112
 
MU 120 Private Voice - Elective
[1 Hour]
Voice majors are taught the understanding and mastery of the functions of voice control and poise and are given opportunity to gain self-control in stage manner. Six hours of practice per week is required. Vocal music majors must complete Senior Recital requirement. Open to non-music majors at permission of instructor.
 
MU 130 Chorale - Elective (by audition only)
[2 Hours]
This is a special group used in performing for chapel services and in traveling to represent the College. Their purpose is recruitment, missions, and practical experience. Students from all majors are eligible to audition.
 
MU 140 Private Keyboard - Elective
[1 Hour]
The student is taught proficiency in technique, sight reading, and improvisation. Keyboard majors will perform in a senior recital. Six hours of practice per week is required.
 
MU 160 Private Instrument - Elective
[1 Hour]
Private instruction on woodwind or brass instruments is offered. The student is taught the mastery of the instrument and is required to practice four hours per week. A senior recital is also required.
Open to non-music majors at permission of instructor.
 
MU 180 Brass Ensemble (by audition only)
[1 Hour]
This specially trained group accompanies various singing groups and represents the school through limited travel.
Students pursuing MU 110 are eligible to audition.
 
MU 121 Sight Singing and Ear Training 1
[1 Hour]
The student will be trained to think, hear, and sing the pitches of intervals, scales, melodies, and chords in this practical course.
 
MU 122 Sight Singing and Ear Training 2
[1 Hour]
The student will be trained to think, hear, and sing the pitches of intervals, scales, melodies, and chords in this practical course.
Prerequisite: Mu 121
 
MU 200 Music Orientation
[2 Hours]
This course is a study of the purpose and philosophy of music from a Biblical viewpoint with an emphasis on fundamentals of music style, music appreciation, and historical and contemporary music trends.
 
MU 211 Advanced Harmony 1
[3 Hours]
This advanced course will include a more thorough study of keys and scales with emphasis on four part choral writing and elementary modulation.
Prerequisite: Mu 112; Mu 122
 
MU 212 Advanced Harmony 2
[3 Hours]
This advanced course will include a more thorough study of keys and scales with emphasis on four part choral writing and elementary modulation.
Prerequisite: Mu 112; Mu 122; Mu 211
 
MU 221 Sight Singing and Ear Training 3
[1 Hours]
A continuation of Mu 122. Advanced training in techniques of sight singing and ear training.
Prerequisite: Mu 122.

MU 231 Music History and Literature 1
[2 Hours]
The history of music is used to draw conclusions in conjunction with music in the Bible, to form a philosophy of music and a practical application for today. The course presents a study of music history and literature that should enable the student to understand and appreciate the world’s greatest music. It is a basic study presented in recognition of the need of every church musician to be at least acquainted with the great musicians and their works.

MU 311 Conducting
[2 Hours]
This course is designed to furnish the specific techniques of choral 
and orchestral conducting. Opportunity is offered the student to 
conduct the Concert Choir. .

This course is designed to furnish the specific techniques of choral 
and orchestral conducting. Opportunity is offered the student to

MU 312 Strings and Percussion Techniques
[2 Hours]
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the fundamental technique of select string and percussion instruments. The student will handle the instruments and learn basic playing skills on them with the emphasis on the development of a Christian band/orchestra program.
 
MU 322 Brass and Woodwind Techniques
[2 Hours]
This course will acquaint the student with the fundamental technique of select brass and woodwind instruments. The student will handle the instruments and learn basic playing skills on them with emphasis on the development of a Christian band/orchestra program.
 
MU 325 Philosophy of Music
[2 Hours]
A course designed to instruct the student in the philosophy of music and the Biblical approach to music. This class is of utmost importance, especially to a pastor.
 
MU 331 Church Music Management
[2 Hours]
This course will teach the prospective church musician how to organize the music program in the church. An important part of this course will deal with the ethics of the position of the music minister in relation to his duties.
 
MU 332 Vocal Pedagogy
[2 Hours]
This course will teach the basic fundamentals of vocal production, including a healthy singing technique, correct body alignment and breath control, correct diction, and developing an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the vocal mechanism.
The object of the course is to give the student a working knowledge of how to apply these methods to help to improve his own vocal technique, as well as learning how to instruct others in proper vocal technique.
 
MU 341 Form and Analysis
[2 Hours]
This is a study in musical form through analysis of composition in various styles of music. A further study in the function of form, i.e., to make music intelligible and communicative by the orderly arrangement of its materials.
 
MU 342 Music Composition
[2 Hours]
Students will write original compositions in various styles of music. Emphasis is given to forms of music in Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary styles. Church music is emphasized.
 
MU 411 Techniques of Orchestral Arrangement
[3 Hours]
This course will instruct the student in the techniques and procedures required in arranging for instrumental groups and creative writing for these groups.
Prerequisite: Mu 212.
 
MU 412 Techniques of Choral Arrangement
[3 Hours]
The student will be instructed in the techniques and procedures required in arranging for vocal groups and creative writing for these groups. Prerequisite: Mu 212
 
MU 412 Counterpoint
[2 Hours]
This course will include a study of the forms and styles of 18th century music, and the student will learn to incorporate it into compositional writing.
 
MU 431 Hymnology
[2 Hours]
Included is a study of German and English hymns and gospel songs. Historic background of culture and society is included to show relationships between environment and inspiration.
 
MU 441 Directed Teaching
[5 Hours]
The music major will be required to complete five hours of directed teaching in one of the local Christian schools. Assignments are made by the head of the Music Department.
 
MU 442 Music Practicum
[6 Hours]
Actual performance and participation in music performance in a local church situation is required for this course. This course is pursued the final semester of program and site approval must be granted before end of preceding semester.Courses.htmlshapeimage_1_link_0
